The Everest Base Camp Trek & Kalapatthar Summit, organized by The Great Outdoors, is a thrilling adventure that takes you deep into the heart of the Himalayas in Nepal. This iconic trek leads you through picturesque Sherpa villages, dense pine forests, and rugged alpine terrain, all the way to Everest Base Camp (5,364 meters), the starting point for mountaineers attempting to summit the world’s highest peak. Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by awe-inspiring views of towering peaks like Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Nuptse. The journey culminates with a sunrise hike to the summit of Kalapatthar (5,545 meters), offering unparalleled panoramic views of Mount Everest and the surrounding Himalayas. This trek combines adventure, natural beauty, and cultural immersion, making it a must-do for any trekking enthusiast.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m)
Welcome to the vibrant capital of Nepal! Upon arrival at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, you’ll be transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to relax or explore the local area. In the evening, you’ll meet with your trekking guide and fellow adventurers for a trip briefing and welcome dinner. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.
Day 2: Meet & Greet / Gear Check. Travel from Kathmandu to Ramechhap (1,300m)
After breakfast, the team will gather for a gear check to ensure everyone is fully prepared for the trek. Then, we embark on a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Ramechhap, a small town where we’ll spend the night. This prepares us for the early flight to Lukla the following day. Overnight stay in Ramechhap.
Day 3: Fly from Ramechhap to Lukla (2,860m), Trek to Phakding (2,610m)
Today, we take a short but thrilling flight from Ramechhap to Lukla, the gateway to the Khumbu region. From Lukla, we begin our trek, heading through forests and traditional Sherpa villages to reach Phakding, a small settlement along the Dudh Koshi River. This first day of trekking is relatively easy, giving you time to adjust to the altitude. Overnight stay in Phakding.
Day 4: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m)
After breakfast, we follow the Dudh Koshi River and cross several suspension bridges adorned with prayer flags. The trail gradually ascends through pine forests, with distant views of Mount Everest and other towering peaks. We reach Namche Bazaar, the famous Sherpa town and trading hub of the Khumbu region. Overnight stay in Namche Bazaar.
Day 5: Acclimatization Day at Namche Bazaar
To aid acclimatization, we spend an additional day at Namche Bazaar. You can explore the bustling town, visit the Sherpa Museum, or hike to the Everest View Hotel for stunning panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. This day helps your body adjust to the higher altitude. Overnight stay in Namche Bazaar.
Day 6: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3,867m)
Leaving Namche, we trek along the ridge, with magnificent views of the Himalayas. Our trail descends to the Dudh Koshi River before climbing to Tengboche, home to the region’s largest and most significant monastery, Tengboche Monastery. This sacred site is surrounded by awe-inspiring views of Everest, Ama Dablam, and other peaks. Overnight stay in Tengboche.
Day 7: Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche (4,410m)
From Tengboche, we continue trekking through rhododendron forests and past small villages, eventually reaching Dingboche, a beautiful settlement nestled in a valley below Ama Dablam. You’ll notice the landscape becoming more rugged and barren as we climb higher into the alpine zone. Overnight stay in Dingboche.
Day 8: Acclimatization Day at Dingboche
Today is another rest and acclimatization day to allow your body to adapt to the increasing altitude. You have the option to hike up to Nangkartshang Peak or explore the nearby Chhukung Valley for impressive views of Island Peak and the surrounding glaciers. Overnight stay in Dingboche.
Day 9: Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche (4,940m)
We continue our ascent, passing through the memorials for climbers who lost their lives on Everest. The trail becomes more rugged and remote as we follow the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier, eventually reaching Lobuche, a small settlement surrounded by towering peaks. Overnight stay in Lobuche.
Day 10: Trek from Lobuche to Gorakshep (5,170m), Visit Everest Base Camp (5,364m)
This is the most exciting day of the trek! We begin by trekking to Gorakshep, where we take a short rest before continuing to Everest Base Camp. The trail follows the Khumbu Glacier and offers surreal, close-up views of the Icefall. Reaching Everest Base Camp is an unforgettable experience, standing at the foot of the world’s highest mountain. After spending time at Base Camp, we return to Gorakshep for the night. Overnight stay in Gorakshep.
Day 11: Sunrise Trek to Kalapatthar (5,545m), Trek to Pheriche (4,240m)
We start early for a sunrise hike to Kalapatthar, the highest point of the trek. From here, you’ll witness the most incredible panoramic views of Mount Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, and the surrounding peaks glowing in the morning light. After soaking in the views, we descend to Gorakshep and continue down to the village of Pheriche. Overnight stay in Pheriche.
Day 12: Trek from Pheriche to Namche Bazaar
We retrace our steps, descending through alpine meadows and forests, passing familiar villages along the way. The trek back to Namche Bazaar offers the chance to revisit the vibrant town and rest after the high-altitude adventure. Overnight stay in Namche Bazaar.
Day 13: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla
Today is the final day of trekking as we return to Lukla, retracing the path along the Dudh Koshi River. Celebrate your successful trek with the team as we spend our last night in the Khumbu region. Overnight stay in Lukla.
Day 14: Fly from Lukla to Ramechhap, Drive to Kathmandu
In the morning, we take a scenic flight from Lukla back to Ramechhap. Upon arrival, we’ll drive back to Kathmandu, where you can relax and enjoy the comforts of city life. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.
Day 15: Sightseeing in Kathmandu / Buffer Day
This day is reserved for sightseeing or as a buffer in case of weather delays. You can visit iconic landmarks in Kathmandu such as Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Boudhanath Stupa, and Pashupatinath Temple. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.
Day 16: Departure from Kathmandu 🛫
After a rewarding trek, it’s time to say goodbye. You’ll be transferred to the airport for your departure, taking with you unforgettable memories of the Everest Base Camp Trek and Kalapatthar Summit.
